Medicare Advantage Help for Dover Families
A good number of Dover retirees choose Medicare Advantage, and it is not hard to see why. One private insurer handles both hospital and doctor coverage, prescriptions are usually included, and many plans add routine benefits Original Medicare does not pay for.
The trade-off is a set of rules that differ from plan to plan. Networks, prior approval requirements and copays are not the same across carriers, and any of them can change on January 1. We put the plans we offer side by side and measure each against how you and your family really use doctors and pharmacies.
Reviews happen by phone or video call, in Spanish or English, and anyone you trust can be on the line with you.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
What Medicare Advantage Is
Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C, is offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. The insurer, rather than the federal program, pays your claims, and it has to cover at least what Original Medicare covers.
- You stay enrolled in Parts A and B and generally keep paying your Part B premium, unless the state picks it up
- Most plans bundle drug coverage, so one card does the work of two
- Every plan has an annual out-of-pocket limit on covered medical services, which Original Medicare alone does not have
- Many plans add routine benefits; see our dental, vision and hearing guide for typical examples
Your Doctors and Hospitals Come First
We begin with a list of everyone who treats you, before talking price. In the Dover area that often includes Saint Clare's in Denville, Morristown Medical Center, community health centers such as Zufall Health, and specialists along Route 10 or in Parsippany.
Next we search for every name in every plan's provider directory. Saving a few dollars means little if your kidney specialist or physical therapist is not in network. We also check that the pharmacy you use, whether it is downtown on Blackwell Street or a mail-order service, has preferred pricing.
An HMO generally limits you to its network and requires referrals to see specialists. A PPO allows out-of-network care at a higher cost. We help you decide which setup matches how you get care.
What You Might Pay in 2026
A $0 premium plan still has costs. Expect copays for office visits, coinsurance for things like MRIs, and per-day charges if you are admitted. The yearly maximum out-of-pocket limit puts a ceiling on those medical costs.
For prescriptions, federal law caps covered drug spending at $2,100 in 2026, and a month of covered insulin costs no more than $35. We enter your actual drugs and dosages so the yearly estimate is based on what you really fill.

When You Can Enroll or Switch
Fall is the primary window. From October 15 to December 7 you can join a Medicare Advantage plan, change to another or return to Original Medicare, with coverage beginning January 1.
Current Part C members get an extra window from January 1 to March 31 to switch once, to another Advantage plan or to Original Medicare. Moving, losing employer coverage and some other life changes can trigger a Special Enrollment Period. Just becoming eligible? Read our turning 65 guide.
Special Needs Plans
Special Needs Plans are designed around a particular group. Some are for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. Others serve members with chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart failure and tailor care coordination to them.
If you have NJ FamilyCare, our D-SNP page explains how these plans coordinate both programs to reduce costs and paperwork.
Is Medicare Advantage Right for You?
Tends to work well if
- Your regular doctors all participate in the network
- One card covering medical care and prescriptions sounds simpler
- An annual out-of-pocket maximum makes budgeting easier
- Extras such as cleanings or glasses would get real use
Think twice if
- You spend long stretches in Colombia, Florida or elsewhere
- You want to see any provider who accepts Medicare
- Prior authorization for scans and surgeries would bother you
- A specialist you rely on is outside the local networks

How does Medicare Advantage differ from Medigap?
They are separate approaches. A Part C plan replaces how your claims are paid, while a Medigap supplement works alongside Original Medicare to cover what is left. You cannot use both together.
Am I still in Medicare if I join a Part C plan?
Yes. You keep your Medicare rights, including appeals, and you still owe the Part B premium unless a state program pays it.
Do these plans cover doctors in New York?
It depends on the plan. Some networks reach into New York and others stay within New Jersey, so we check each provider by name.
Can my daughter join the call?
Absolutely. With your permission, family members or a caregiver can join, and we can speak Spanish the entire time.
Is there a fee for your help?
No. The insurer pays us if you enroll, and your premium does not change because of that.
