Straight Answers About Medicare in Dover, New Jersey

Every fall, mailboxes across Dover, NJ fill up with glossy brochures, plan booklets and ads promising grocery cards. Most people tuck them in a drawer. We offer a calmer route: a phone or video visit where we go through the envelopes with you and figure out which ones actually matter.

We are a privately owned, independent agency, so we work with more than one insurance company. That means we can hold several plans up against your prescriptions, your physicians and the monthly amount you are comfortable paying, then explain in everyday words which one makes the most sense.

Roughly three of every four Dover residents are Hispanic, per the 2020 Census, with deep Colombian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Honduran and Ecuadorian roots. So conversations can run fully in Spanish, and a grandchild, sibling or home aide is welcome to join on speaker.

Prefer counseling from someone who sells nothing? New Jersey's SHIP counselors (nj.gov)(opens another website) and the official Medicare line (Medicare.gov)(opens another website) are free options too.

What we help with:

An Old Iron Town on the Rockaway River

Dover grew up around John Jackson's iron forge, built in 1722 beside the Rockaway River, and later around the Morris Canal, whose old boat basin is now JFK Memorial Commons Park. Today 18,460 people (2020 Census) share about 2.68 square miles of land, with the Victorian storefronts of the Blackwell Street Historic District at the center and NJ Transit trains on the Morristown and Montclair-Boonton lines stopping downtown.

That geography shapes the questions people bring us. Is Saint Clare's in Denville in the network? What about Morristown Medical Center, roughly eleven miles away, or a specialist in Paterson? Will my plan travel with me on a long trip to Medellín or Tegucigalpa? We answer those first, before any form gets signed.

Medicare's Lettered Parts, One at a Time

Medicare is split into four lettered pieces. Part A handles inpatient hospital stays; in 2026 the deductible is $1,736 for every benefit period. Part B pays for physician visits, tests and outpatient treatment, with a standard premium of $202.90 a month and a $283 deductible each year.

Part C, better known as Medicare Advantage, lets a private insurer handle your A and B benefits, typically with drug coverage built in. Part D is a separate prescription plan. This year, your own spending on covered prescriptions is capped at $2,100, and covered insulin runs no more than $35 per monthly supply.

What a Plan Really Costs Over a Year

The premium is only the first number. A plan with a tiny monthly charge can end up expensive once your heart medicine lands on a high tier or the specialist you count on turns out to be outside its network.

So our comparisons show everything side by side: the monthly charge, the copay for a typical visit, an estimate of a full year of your own prescriptions, and whether each of your doctors participates. You weigh the trade-offs, and you make the call.

If you fill a lot of prescriptions, our Part D page breaks down drug lists, cost tiers and preferred pharmacies.

Local Support Beyond Your Insurance Card

The town runs Dover Senior Dial-a-Ride, a free service for residents 55 and older and for residents with disabilities. It goes to spots such as the Municipal Building, Saint Clare's Hospital, ShopRite and the senior buildings on weekdays, and rides need 24 hours' notice. You can read the details on the Town of Dover transportation page (dover.nj.us)(opens another website).

Morris County's Division on Aging, Disabilities and Community Programming adds meals, caregiver help and benefit counseling. And many of our clients enjoy Hurd Park with its doughboy statue, the trails at Hedden County Park, or the Colombian festival at Crescent Field. A good plan should fit around all of that, not the other way around.

Key Enrollment Dates

The fall window runs October 15 through December 7. During it, anyone on Medicare can start, change or cancel Part C or Part D coverage. Whatever you choose takes effect January 1.

Already in Medicare Advantage? A first-quarter window, January 1 to March 31, allows one switch to another Part C plan or a return to Original Medicare.

Nearing 65? Your initial window lasts seven months and is centered on your birthday month, and signing up late can mean a penalty that sticks. Our turning 65 page explains the timeline, and a yearly plan review keeps you on track after that.

Questions Dover Residents Ask Us

What does a review cost me?

Nothing at all. When a person enrolls, the insurance company compensates us, and the premium you pay is exactly what it would be if you signed up on your own.

¿Hablan español?

Claro que sí. A large share of the Dover families we work with prefer Spanish, and we happily explain any notice or enrollment form in it.

Nothing changed for me this year. Is a review still worth it?

Usually, yes. Carriers can drop a clinic, shift a drug to a costlier tier or raise a copay starting each January, and your fall Annual Notice of Change is where that shows up. Ten minutes with it can save a surprise.

Is this website run by Medicare?

It is not. We are a private, independent agency with no tie to Medicare, Social Security or any government office.

How should I prepare for our call?

Gather your pill bottles or a written list of medicines, the names of the doctors you see and your usual pharmacy. Your Medicare number is not needed to compare plans.
